A Study of Pokerus

Description

Pokerus is a disease that was originally found in Pokemon. It is caused by a retrovirus that quickly and easily mutates. Pokerus is spread through the air and is extremely contagious. If caught by a pokemon, it causes mild flu like symptoms as well as a strange effect.....

Pokerus is most commonly known for its side effect. It stimulates the growth hormones found in pokemon, causing unusually rapid growth. Trainers utilize this disease to get their pokemon to grow stronger and larger than usual. Pokemon at the same age who have had pokerus will exhibit stronger abilities.

In the exhibit above, two laboratory pikachus with the same DNA (albino pikachus are typically used in testing) were raised from the same level to the same level and were fed the same diet. The one on the right was inoculated with pokerus at an early level, but the one on the left is the control. The right pikachu is clearly larger than the left one and closer inspection revealed it had higher special attack, defense, etc.

Pokerus has a reservoir that allowed it to be carried into many other worlds. A reservoir is a species that can carry the virus but never shows signs of the disease. Human beings are the reservoir for pokerus and they have successfully spread it throughout Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Shinou, and Orre as well as carrying it into Splithia. Being a retrovirus, pokerus mutates into a variety of other strains. "P-Strain" is the most common, which is the one found in pokemon. "N-Strain" is the type that affects nightmarens.

Many creatures in Splithia were affected by Pokerus, but unlike pokemon, they develop severe, life-threatening disease. The growth that is highly welcomed in pokemon is a massive and grotesque mutation is most other affected species. In addition to mutating, other species, such as Nightmarens, typically go insane after being infected.
