The howling of the high mountain winds was the first thing he noticed. In his mind's eye, he could see the string of boxy symbols that spelled out "Initializing". His internal sensors noticed the freezing cold next. He tried to move his wings or lift himself into the air, but his heavy stone body would not have it. His hull shuddered as he tried, though.
"Easy, easy!" a voice said from right in front.
At that moment, the visual system kicked on.
The nameless sentinel looked up at the small framed red cloak. Something deep within his memory told him there was something he should do, but he couldn't remember exactly what that was...did it have to do with the scarf?
"Wait until you're all started up before you move," the red cloak chirped.
The sentinel lay very still.
"We'll run a couple tests once your system is finished booting," the red cloaked wayfarer explained.
The sentinel remained quiet as the painstakingly slow process dragged on. He observed the red cloaked wayfarer. He remembered seeing them from somewhere, but from where? It was maddening! He felt there were events and images he needed to access, but they were too faint to recall...as if they were locked in a box and he had no key. Little did the sentinel know, they WERE in fact in his memory, just password protected.
"I upgraded your software to a new version. It's pretty...how shall we say...experimental? I got it from my good friend Bill."
The wayfarer chirped away to the immobile sentinel, who had no choice but to listen.
"My name is Henry, do you have a name?" the talkative red cloak asked.
The sentinel paused for a moment, temporarily forgetting how to speak.
"No."
"Well, what would you LIKE to be called? You're my companion now, surely you must have a name. Wait...Shirley!"
"Don't call me Shirley."
This red cloak...Henry, was it? He never shut up...
"Danny, Benny, Harry, Wesley, Lenny..."
"Wesley! There...call me that."
The sentinel mainly wanted the red cloak to stop chirping...
"Ok! Wesley...I like the sound of that. Hey, you should be fully started up now. Try moving around."
The sentinel moved his heavy stone body again. It rattled again at first, but then his flight mechanisms, which worked by using a series of magnets, turned on for the first time in ages. Wesley took to the air, turning his segments to shake off snow.
The snowfield looked familiar. It looked as it did the last time he saw it, though he could not remember why he had been blacked out for so long.
Wesley observed Henry the red cloak again. He had his little cloak wrapped around himself tightly and was shivering a little. The scarf he had didn't seem to be keeping him very warm and neither were the seemingly out of place knee high snow boots. Wesley's internal mechanisms felt different. He felt sort of a sinking feeling inside. THAT was new...he had no memory, not even faint ones, about such things.
"Is something wrong?" Henry asked, for once being quiet.
"No," Wesley said after much hesitation.
Whatever that odd sensation was, it would not let him leave Henry behind. It also grew stronger once Wesley thought about how cold Henry must be...
"Get on," Wesley said, "I'll fly you somewhere warm."
Henry had the happy look in his eyes as he fluttered up to Wesley's level.
A subtle, warm feeling was now inside his stone frame. He had no idea what it was, but it made him feel much better than the sinking feeling. It would be awhile before he learned those sensations were called "emotions". His kind normally couldn't feel them...in fact, they were a bug in the new program that Bill or any other wayfarer didn't know about. There would be time to learn, though. Right now, Wesley's thoughts were occupied by the need to get his companion to somewhere he wouldn't freeze.
Together, Henry and Wesley flew away from the icy mountain to find warmer weather.
