Edmund gazed out across the strange landscape...or spacescape, rather.  The fragments of land were getting thinner and thinner as he moved away from land.  The shore he sailed from was nothing but a blue and green strip in the distance.  It looked a bit like an oil painter had smeared a single stroke of mixed paint on a black canvas.  Some beige paint had gotten mixed in, leaving a trail of tiny blotches in the smooth paint stroke...it was all that could be seen of the port Edmund had sailed away from.
He sailed forward on nothing...no water was below his ship.  He was carried only by the currents of energy out in that inky abyss.  A wake of faint pink waves could be seen behind the golden hulled ship.  They looked very little like normal waves; having the appearance of shimmering curtains that folded in on themselves and grew fainter as more distance was out between them.
Edmund, the small statured golden robot couldn't help but feel nervous as he stared out into nothingness.  There was no promise of another shore...an exit point from this space.  He very well could drift forever...  The elegant ship with its golden sides and aurora sails could become his tomb.  But such is the risk when one is an explorer.
Someone had to find out if there was something on the other side of the Great Gate.  Ever since its opening, no one had tried to sail across.
After several tense hours floating inside the star studded sphere, Edmund saw a new light.  He thought it might be another star, but then he noticed it move.  Whatever it was darted in an irregular pattern, moving quickly toward his ship!
As it approached, Edmund couldn't help but let out a cry and shield himself.  No impact occurred though.  He cautiously looked up.
The light was coming from an odd, ice cream cone shaped being.  It had a semi clear body, from which light emanated...much like a deep sea creature.  It blinked its two shiny eyes, just as curious about Edmund as he was about it.
The strange new being let out a string of harp like notes and sped off.
After tht encounter, many more new creatures began to appear.  Delicate bubble beings, glowing angel winged rays, long thin deer headed creatures with rainbow sheened scales, and even fuzzy clouds of energy that seemed to grow eyes only when they wished to see.  The void was not a void at all!  There were many life forms out here.  The promise of life gave Edmund the confidence he needed to press onward.  He boldly headed into space, searching for lands no one even knew existed.
Inspired by the song "Ride Captain Ride".
